It’s those Damn Environmentalists!

PG&E, per a backroom deal reached with Labor, environmental groups, and the state, is agreeing to withdraw its application with the feds to extend the licences of Diablo Canyon’s twin nuclear reactors another 30 years. PG&E cites recently passed state legislation requiring 50% renewable energy generation by 2030 as the main motivation for the decision. The fact that the plant is no longer profitable enough to justify its high overhead costs probably wasn’t a factor. Nor was the evolving perception among energy providers that baseline power plants that run 24/7 are rapidly becoming obsolete.
